the right rev. dr. tyrone c. black

Bishop Tyrone Carlton Black, born January 5, 1972 in Hartford, Connecticut to Joe O. Black and Beverly A. (Black) Carter. He graduated from St. Justin School (elementary & middle high school) in Hartford, Connecticut, Westminster Preparatory School in Simsbury, Connecticut. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1994 (English Major) from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, a Master of Science degree in 2004 (Education) from the University of New Haven, and a Doctorate of Education in Higher Education Administration and Organizational Change from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois. His dissertation topic is: A Phenomenological Study: The Exploration of Students’ Faith, Spirituality and Engagement While Attending a Medium-Sized, Jesuit University in New England.

In May 1987, Bishop Black accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior not realizing the path that had been laid before him. In August of 1994, Bishop Black was ordained as a minister in Ebenezer Holy Temple Incorporated following in the lineage of his grandfather, the late Bishop William H. Carter, his grandmother Overseer-Emeritus Annie Carter, and his mother Elder Beverly A. Carter. On July 13, 1997, Bishop Black was installed as the pastor of Carter Memorial Temple, EHT, Inc., which is the church of his natural birth. The Lord began to bless his ministry significantly. He began to seek the Lord, and soon after, the Lord called him to the next level. On June 22, 2002 he was elevated to the high holy office of Bishop/Overseer over the general assembly of Ebenezer Holy Temple, Incorporated.

It is important to note:

  • In 1993, he founded and directed the Saints United in Faith Praise Choir.

  • From 1994-1999, Bishop Black was a counselor in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference in Pennsylvania, where he also directed the 80 voice gospel choir.

  • He is the founder of the Westminster College (PA) 100 voice Gospel Choir, which was and still is an organization comprised of various individuals from various religious, ethnic and social backgrounds.

  • He is the founder and director of the Cheshire Academy Voices of Freedom (gospel choir) which is comprised of 15 different nations. This choir completed three live recordings.

  • He is the former director of the Quinnipiac University Praise “2” Him Ensemble.

  • He oversees the National EHT Praise and Worship Team.

  • Within his own church and fellowship organization he has established multiple ministries and directs the church choir, which produced its first CD in 2006 entitled “God is Alive”, and the Fifth Sunday Fellowship Choir

Bishop Black believes that gospel music is one of the most powerful and instrumental tools in spreading both Christ’s love and purpose for our lives. In addition, he was the Vice President for HGD Ministries, which is incorporated in the states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. HGD Ministries is an established ecumenical organization of four pastors who travel nationally orchestrating sacred music workshops, counseling, youth retreats, and most of all conducting powerful life changing revivals. It is their soul purpose to bring down the denominational and racial barriers that attempts to separate the church of Jesus Christ.

Every summer you will find Bishop Black and his church outside feeding the masses, providing canned goods, clothing and booklets to the surrounding community.

Bishop Black is the past co-chair of the formerly named New England Consortium of Black Admissions Counselors (NECBAC).

He served on the Board of Directors for Journey Home which is a not-for Profit Corporation partnering with the community to implement the Capital Region’s Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness.

He is a former member of the Admissions Advisory Board for both Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and Queens University in Charlotte, NC. He presently serves in the same capacity at his alma mater, Westminster College.

He previously served on the Board of Directors of P.L.A.C.E. (Partnerships in Learning and Creative Exploration, Inc.) which is a 501c-3 non-profit organization currently run by an exceptional group of dedicated volunteers. The mission of P.L.A.C.E. is to engage the community in the exploration of world culture through art, plays and learning.

In 2008, he traveled to Lambarene, Gabon, Africa with a delegation of peers to conduct research on those affected by AIDS and Malaria. While there he spent several days visiting those living in Leper colonies and were greatly afflicted with Leprosy.

He is the former Head of Middle & Upper Schools, and Director of Student Advancement at Wooster School in Danbury, Connecticut.

He is currently the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Goodwin College in East Hartford, Connecticut. He is also the founder and CEO of T. Carlton Educational Consulting, LLC. providing college counseling services to clients both domestic and international.

Bishop Black travels nationally conducting diversity workshops at universities, high schools, churches, and business corporations.

He is truly a man with a vision, a mission, and a heart for Christ.
